Sydney-Australia IEEE-SMC celebration lecture series

The first Sydney-Australia IEEE SMC (Systems, Man and Cybernetics) Celebration Lecture
Series (CLS) was held on April 17, 2014 at the University of Sydney. CLS aims to provide
expert insights, advice and professional training, as well as an academic forum and networking
opportunity to PhD students and early career researchers in their future academic career. In
2013, the CLS was hosted in Northern Ireland, UK and in China in 2009, 2010 and 2011. The
topic of the series was "the Making of an Academic" and was attended by well over 130
delegates from universities across Australia.

2014 IEEE SMC Celebration Lecture Series (CLS) in Taipei

The 2014 IEEE SMC Celebration Lecture Series was held at the College of Science and
Engineering at Fu Jen Catholic University, Taipei, Taiwan on 14 April 2014. This was probably
the first time Fu Jen Catholic University hosted an event in collaboration with the IEEE. The
Lecture Series was presented under the title of "The Making of an Academic," in which topics
such as excellence and innovation in teaching, building a strong professional network, effective
research presentation, the quest for creative research, and the preparation of a manuscript as
well as research grant proposal are presented and discussed.

SMC 2013 Manchester, UK, Conference Report


2013 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics (SMC 2013) between
13 and 16 October in Manchester, UK. The conference theme was "Cyber Systems Enabling
Knowledge Integration: The Smart Response to Emerging Societal Challenges". The
conference attracted 1179 submissions addressing state-of-the art developments in systems
science and engineering, cybernetics and human machine systems. The program committee
undertook a rigorous review process which resulted in accepting a total of 835 papers.

Call for Papers:  IEEE SMC Magazine

Article subjects include the integration of the theories of communication, control, cybernetics,
optimization, systems engineering technology development, including problem definition
methods, modeling, and simulation, methods of system experimentation, human factors
engineering, as well as their application to the variety of systems including human-machine,
biological, technological, ecological, socio-economic, and societal systems, data and
methods, systems design techniques and test and evaluation methods, and system structure
towards the formulation of a general theory of systems

Information for Authors - IEEE SMC Magazine

IEEE System, Man, and Cybernetics Magazine is published quarterly. Each paper submitted
is subject to a thorough review process, and the publication decision is based on the
comments and recommendations of the reviewers. Review management is generally under the
direction of an associate editor. Often, reviews take 6 weeks but can take up to three to four
months, occasionally longer. An additional several months is required for the publication
process.

Invitation to apply for Senior Membership of IEEE

Senior member is the highest grade for which IEEE members can apply. IEEE members can
self-nominate, or be nominated, for Senior member grade.

To be eligible for application or nomination, candidates must:

1. be engineers, scientists, educators, technical executives, or originators in IEEE-
designated fields;

2. have experience reflecting professional maturity;

3. have been in professional practice for at least ten years;

4. show significant performance over a period of at least five of their years in professional
practice.
