Professor Mingcong Deng receives 2014 SMC Meritorious Service Award

Mingcong Deng, Professor at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology received the IEEE SMC 2014 Meritorious Service Award for meritorious and significant service to SMC Society-sponsored activities. Dr. Deng served as the IEEE SMC Society Program Chair of the 2009 IEEE International Conference on Networking, Sensing and Control, General Co-Chair of International Conference on Advanced Mechatronic Systems for 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 sponsored by SMCS, Special session Co-Chair and Advisory Committee at three SMC Conferences, served for 8 SMC-sponsored conferences as IPC member, and Program Co-Chair at the other two IEEE-sponsored conferences, served for 15 IEEE- sponsored conferences as IPC member.

Dr. Deng is Associate Editor of IEEE T-ASE and has made pioneering contributions to the area of nonlinear systems control and fault detection on thermoelectric conversion processes and plants with smart material actuators. He contributed a book entitled “Operator-Based Nonlinear Control Systems Design and Applications” to the SMCS solely sponsored IEEE/Wiley Book Series on Systems Science and Engineering. He is the author and co-author of more than 125 peer-reviewed journal papers and 180 international conference proceeding papers.

Professor Deng received his BS and MS from Northeastern University, China, Ph.D. in Systems Science from Kumamoto University, Japan, in 1997. From 1997 to 2010 he served Kumamoto University, University of Exeter (UK), NTT Communication Science Laboratories (Japan) and Okayama University (Japan). He is presently a full time professor at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Japan.

Prof. Deng specializes in three complementary areas: Operator based nonlinear fault detection and fault tolerant control system design; System design on thermoelectric conversion elements; Applications on smart material actuators. Prof. Deng has over 300 publications including 125 journal papers, 9 books (or chapters.) He serves as a chief editor for International Journal of Advanced Mechatronic Systems (IJAMechS) and Global Journal of Technology and Optimization (GJTO), and associate editors of 6 international journals, including with IEEE Trans. on Automation Science and Engineering.
