Brains and Machines and Prizes—Oh, My!

As part of the 2018 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (SMC 2018)—the flagship annual conference of the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society—the IEEE SMC 2018 8th Workshop on Brain-Machine Interface Systems (BMI) will be held on October 7-10, 2018 in Miyazaki, Japan. The four-day workshop (free to all registered IEEE SMC 2018 attendees) will feature tutorials, panels,  prominent invited speakers, presentations of contributed papers, and the brain initiatives meeting, and—wait for it—a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) Hackathon with over $4,000 in prizes!

Bonus: The IEEE SMC Society and the IEEE President, James Jefferies, will host a special meeting of global Brain Initiative leaders from Japan, China, US (NSF and NIH), KoreaAustralia, New Zealand, Europe (HBP),IEEE, and other groups working on large-scale multi-year brain projects. Topics include:

  • Current status of global Brain Initiatives and the International Brain Initiative
  • Future collaboration and cooperation opportunities with each other
  • Commercialization and standardization
  • Neuroethics
  • Data sharing

About that Hackathon: It’s a two-day marathon (October 7-8, 2018) where groups of participants produce fully functional BCI prototypes. Judges evaluate the results, and award winnings that range from $100 to $1,200! For more info about the projects, forming and joining teams, and registering, visit the IEEE SMC 2018 BCI Hackathon site—and even better, students can join by registering for the hackathon student competition!

Want more? Registering for and attending the Hackathon is free (including food!) and does not require registering for any Conference event!
