Focus On: Technical Committee on Awareness Computing

Scope

The goal of awareness computing (AC) is to build systems that are aware. Awareness may not imply full
understanding, cybernetics, or intelligence. Awareness is the state or ability to perceive, to feel, or to be
conscious. It implies vigilance in observing or alertness in drawing inferences from what one
experiences. Compared with artificial intelligence (AI), the goal of AC is less ambitious. However,
awareness is the most fundamental ability for any living being to survive or any system to be cybernetic.
Without awareness, a system will never become cybernetic or intelligent. Moreover, awareness can
make computation towards the goal of AI more efficient by shedding off irrelevant possibilities.

The scope of this TC is to study AC formally and scientifically, and establish AC as a new research field
with a unique theoretical foundation to encompass a large set of problems, rather than considering
different applications separately and independently in an ad-hoc manner. By studying all kinds of AC
related problems in a unified framework, we can gain insights about aware systems and the mechanism
of awareness existing in different living beings. To reach this goal, we provide a platform for the
researchers, engineers, and scientists to discuss and exchange ideas, opinions, and the latest results
to consolidate this emerging new field.

Goals for the Next Five Years

So far, we have organized the annual conference iCAST (International Conference on Awareness
Science and Technology) five times, and we will continue this event in the future. At the same time, we
would like to cooperate with SMC annual conference and the CYBCONF biennial conference by
organizing special sessions or special tracks. Specifically, we will move the iCAST conference to Paris
in 2014, and is planning to hold this conference somewhere in the USA in 2015. We will try to attract
more members and increase the number of members to 100 or more within five years through our
academic activities and through our contributions.
