The 2014 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (SMC2014) will be held at the luxurious Paradise Point Resort and Spa, 1404 Vacation Road, San Diego, located 15 minutes north on a 44 acre private island of Mission Bay. Paradise Point features comfortable bungalow-style rooms amidst lush, tropical gardens, tranquil lagoons, and 1.5 miles of sandy beach next door to Sea World and many other amenities.
Paradise Point Resort & Spa offers a unique San Diego experience with a location that is secluded, yet centrally situated. The airport, downtown San Diego, and top attractions including Old Town, the San Diego Zoo, and Balboa Park are all just minutes away. All SMC2014 events will be held at the Paradise Point Resort & Spa where accommodations have been reserved at discounted rates for attendees. SMC2014 is the flagship conference of the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society. It provides an international forum for researchers and practitioners to report up-to-the-minute innovation and development, summarize state-of-the-art, and exchange ideas and advances in all aspects of systems science and engineering, human machine systems, and cybernetics.
SMC 2014 is dedicated to Norbert Wiener, the “Father of Cybernetics.” In honor of the 120th anniversary of his birth, the Norbert Wiener Panel Sessions will feature 10 past recipients each the Norbert Wiener Award – the primary research award of the IEEE SMC Society – during which each panel member will present opinions on broad topics for which SMC Society members can positively change the future, and future trends for SMC technologies and applications. Prepared remarks by the panel members will be followed by an open discussion between the panel and the audience. The Norbert Wiener Panel Sessions will be held at noon on October 6 and October 7.
Keynote presentations will be given by executives from Ford Research, Cisco Systems, and Qualcomm. Topics include Vehicles of the Future, Networked Applications with the Internet of Things, and Digital 6th Sense. The keynote presentations will be held during the mornings of October 6, 7, and 8th.
At SMC 2014, 7 tutorials and 4 workshops will provide an opportunity for conference attendees to explore cutting-edge topics; acquire new insights, knowledge, and skills; and learn from leaders in the field.
Admission to the tutorials and workshops will be provided at no extra charge to all attendees who have indicated their choice on the registration form when they register for SMC 2014. For attendees who are not preregistered, admission to the tutorials and workshops will be on a space available basis.
Topics for the tutorials include Cloud Computing, Interaction Design, Big Data, Adaptive Collaboration Systems, Game Theory, Agent Based Software Engineering, and Brain Machine Interaction. All tutorials will be held on Sunday, October 5.
Topics for the workshops include Human-Centered Intelligent Vehicles and Assistive and Rehabilitative Technologies and Applications, and Brain-Machine Interface Systems. The workshops will be held on Sunday, October 5. In addition, the Workshop on Brain-Machine Interface Systems will include sessions during the main Conference on October 6-8.
On Wednesday, October 8, the 2nd International Workshop on Intelligent Energy Systems (IWIES 2014) will be held in parallel with SMC 2014, bringing together researchers from academia, industry, standardization and public authorities to discuss recent developments in architectures, concepts and algorithms for managing the increasing complexity in Smart Grids and intelligent energy systems.
An exhibition of technologies and products will be held in the Mission Bay Room of Paradise Point Resort. In addition to exhibits from companies, universities, and book publishers, there will be demonstration of technologies and posters. Details of the exhibition and its sponsors will be forthcoming on the SMC2014 website.
On Sunday evening, October 5, a Welcome Reception will be held outside on the terrace of Paradise Point Resort for all conference attendees. Refreshments will be provided and entertainment will feature nationally acclaimed San Diego guitarist, Jimmy Patton. In 2001, Patton claimed the title of “Best Unsigned Guitarist in the Nation,” defeating over 3,000 guitarists across the entire United States.
On Tuesday evening, October 7, the Conference Banquet will be held, preceded by the annual SMC Awards Ceremony at which the awards will be presented to recognize outstanding volunteers and their significant achievements. Entertainment during the Conference Banquet will be provided by the Mariachi Garibaldi, a performing ensemble from Southwestern College, the first school in the world to offer a college degree in mariachi music. Directed by Jeff Nevin, Mariachi Garibaldi has performed countless engagements in venues large and small, on three continents, since 1998.
Other notable events include a reception for IEEE Young Professionals and Women in Engineering on Monday, October 6, a reception on October 6 for SMC Technical Committee Chairs and SMC Chapter Chairs, and an appreciation lunch on Tuesday, October 7, for Associate Editors of the Society’s publications. Details of these and other events will be listed in the final program that will be posted on the SMC 2014 website and distributed during registration.
On-site registration for SMC 2014 will begin on Sunday, October 5 and continue every day of the conference.
