Technical Committee on Intelligent Learning in Control Systems

Ching-Chih Tsai, Kao-Shing Hwang, and Han-Xiong Li

Scope

The IEEE SMC TC on Intelligent Learning on Control Systems  has been devoted to promoting the theoretical development, technical innovations, interdisciplinary aspects of integration of learning and control and their applications to advanced research areas and commercial products, including autonomous  systems, intelligent control systems, intelligent robotic systems, intelligent cooperation of multiple agents, unmanned vehicles, bio-mimetic systems  and so forth.

Membership

With close cooperation of the three TC co-chairs, Ching-Chih Tsai, Kao-Shing Hwang, and Han-Xiong Li, this TC has invited more than 36 TC members to actively join all conferences, symposia and activities supported by IEEE SMC and Taichung Chapter, IEEE SMC Tainan Chapter, and also paid significant attention to technically supporting several international conferences in addition to SMC annual conference; in particular, we were actively involved with organizing or chairing 2009 and 2011 international conference on service and interactive robotics, SICE 2012 annual conference in Taipei, 2010 and 2011 international conferences on system science and engineering, 2012 international conference on fuzzy theory and its applications, and 2012 international automatic control conference, and 2012 IEEE International conference on advanced intelligent mechatronics.

In addition to assisting organization and paper reviews of IEEE SMC transactions and conferences, the three TC co-chairs have been promoting and undertaking TC related research topics using their own laboratories in recent years. For example, Dr. Ching-Ching Tsai has been performing TC research topics on intelligent control systems and intelligent robotic systems using biological algorithms and fuzzy neural networks in his advanced electrical control lab and intelligent robotics lab in National Chung Hsing University, Taichung, Taiwan ; Dr. Kao-Shing Hwang  has been carrying out two TC related research interests on anthropocentric robotics and multi-robot systems in his Intelligent Robotics and Informatics Systems (IRIS) Lab in the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Sun Yat-sen University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan; Dr. Han-Xiong Li has developed two laboratories related to system and cybernetic work. One lab is called "system modeling and control" in Department of Systems Eng & Eng Management in City University of Hong Kong, in Hong Kong. The other lab is called "intelligent learning and control" in School of Mechanical & Electrical Engineering in Central South University, in China.

These endeavors of the TC are rewarded by the 2012 Most Active SMC Technical Committee Award.

Date started

The TC has been established in  2009 with 18 initial committee members.

Goals for the next five years.

During the next five years, our TC will work toward not only recruiting more active members for SMC society and for our TC members, particularly from China and other countries, but also involving more activities with SMC conferences and other international conferences, especially for organizing one special session for 2013  IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Manchester, UK, 2013 international conferences on system science and engineering held in Budapest, Hungry, 2013 international conference on fuzzy theory and its applications in Taipei, Taiwan, 2013 CACS international automatic control conference held in Sun-Moon Lake, Nantou, Taiwan, 2013 international conference on advanced robotics and intelligent systems in Tainan, Taiwan, and 2014  CACS international automatic control conference held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Another work would be to edit a special session on intelligent learning on control systems in new SMC Transactions on System Science and Engineering.    Meanwhile, we expect to expand the number of the committee member up to 60 in next five years and organize several local colloquiums on some emerging topics concerning learning control and intelligent systems.
