Making of an Academic-The 3rd SCUT SMC Celebration Lecture Series-

The IEEE SMC Guangzhou Chapter has jointly organized the 3rd SCUT SMC Celebration Lecture Series (CLS) with both School of Computer Science and Engineering and School of Software Engineering of South China University of Technology (SCUT) in the morning of 8th July 2011.

The CLS was hosted by Prof. Daniel Yeung, Junior Past President of the SMCS. Five IEEE Fellows and SMCS officers delivered wonderful seminars to audiences. This event attracted more than 150 IEEE members, GOLD members and potential members from SCUT and other universities in Guangdong Province of China. Young staffs and graduate students from Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangdong University of Technology, South China Normal University, Guangzhou University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, Guangdong Pharmaceutical University, Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, etc, enjoyed the high quality seminars.

The aim of the 3rd CLS is to deliver valuable experiences of our speakers on being a good academic in different aspects: teaching, journal paper writing, high quality researches, international networking and industrial collaboration. Prof. Ljiljana Trajkovic with Simon Fraser University gave a seminar on teaching excellence. Prof. TK Ho with Bell Laboratory discovered how to perform high quality researches. Prof. Witold Pedrycz with University of Alberta introduced good practices in journal writing. Prof. William Gruver with Simon Fraser University shared his experiences on industrial collaboration. The benefits of joining the IEEE SMCS and ways of expanding our international networks were delivered by Prof. Michael Smith with University of California, Berkeley. These five seminars provided a lot of useful information and first hand experiences to our attendees.
