IEEE SMC Society Germany Chapter

The IEEE SMC Society German Chapter is a relatively young initiative as it was founded with the beginning of the year 2006 in Darmstadt at the Fraunhofer Integrated Publication and Information Systems Institute IPSI (http://www.ipsi.fraunhofer.de/index_e.html). The intermediate and long term aims of the chapter are

  • to concentrate scientific interest of German researchers and professionals in the SMC Society fields of interest (see http://www.ieeesmc.org/)
  • provide a forum for discussion and exchange among members of IEEE SMC Society in Germany
  • encourage newcomers to participate and support the chapter activities with their engagement and innovative ideas
  • establish an international/intercultural link between German SMC chapter members and the research and professional activities worldwide
  • invite DLs to spread recent research results to the interested chapter community and help to get to know eachother attending at such events
  • inform members on what's going on in the scientific community, helping them to stay uptodate (e.g. via book reviews)
  • enrich membership for all members as much as possible
  • initiate interdisciplinary exchange and discussion

The current website of the chapter is located here: http://www.inf.uni- konstanz.de/ieeesmc/index.html

In 2006, June 12 chapter committee was happy to invite Prof. Bill Gruver (research interests: Inteligent & Distributed Enterprise, among others) from Canada, Simon Fraser University, Head of the Automation Laboratory. As former president of the IEEE SMC Society (2004-05) resp. current junior past president (2006-07) we was able to learn a lot from his experience. Our meeting was located at the University of Kassel, where our host and interim committee vice-chair Prof. Gunnar Johannsen is head of the Systems Engineering and Human-Machine Systems Group (Institute for Measurement and Automation/IMAT, Department of Mechanical Engineering).

Currently (November 2006) the chapter (esp. The nomination committee) is arranging its first chapter committee elections among the chapter members.

The IEEE SMC Society German Chapter meets at least four times a year. Every member is cordially invited to join. Next meeting will be probably in December 2006.

The IEEE SMC Society German Chapter Committee is still an interim one (until the end of 2006). Its members are as follows:
Chairman: Dr. Mark Mattingley-Scott
Vice Chair: Prof. Gunnar Johannsen, who will abdicate in December; then Prof. Birgit Vogel-Heuser will assume his office
Chapter Treasurer: Dr. Jörn Kohlhammer
Chapter Secretary: Jorinde Witte
